Netherlands | Coolrec UK, part of the integrated waste management company Van Gansewinkel Groep, closes down its fridge and CRT recycling factory in Basildon, United Kingdom. Strong price competition in the UK recycling markets has significantly diminished prospects for the company. In addition, prices for output materials have plummeted due to the global economic situation, the Dutch parent group says.

Starting next month, many retailers in the US metropolis New York will be required to recycle plastic shopping bags under a bill New York Governor David Paterson signed into law on Saturday.
Effective January 1, large grocers and other retailers that offer plastic bags to their customers will be required to put out bins where shoppers can deposit them and recycle the returned bags.
