The largest US Steel fabricator Nucor Corp. plans to invest US$45 million over the next five years at its Nucor Steel South Carolina Steel Mill in Darlington. The project will include improvements to the existing steel mill facility such as upgraded equipment in the rolling mills and improvements to the scrap conveyor, alloy handling systems, ductwork, railroad tracks and cranes. Ship scrapping accelerated in Asian countries like India, Bangladesh and Pakistan after a plunge in the price of obsolete carriers attracted buyers, the largest US cash purchaser Global Marketing Systems says to news agency Bloomberg.
The demolition sale price of a general cargo ship based on its empty weight, so-called light displacement tonnage, fell to US$225 a tonne in Bangladesh compared with US$680 in July, the company says. ... more

New report considers Russian metal recycling machinery market |

A new report jumps into the Russian scrap metal market, focussing on all aspects of the Russian scrap metal recycling equipment. The report, entitled "Review of the Russian Scrap Metal Recycling Equipment Market" is published by the Irish agency Research and Markets.
In 2007 scrap metal consumption in Russia amounted to more than 270,000 tonnes, and as compared to a similar period in the year 2006, this figure has risen by 20%. The volume of automotive scrap has increased greatly. According to Research and Markets, this has led to an increasing demand for scrap metal recycling equipment.

Malaysia’s trade minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has lifted the export ban on scrap metal to enable scrap dealers to clear their stock that has piled up over the months. United States | The US Environmental Protection Agency has fined Jet Ocean Technologies of Chino, California, US$10,300 for failing to notify the EPA of an export shipment of cathode ray tubes (CRTs), in violation of federal hazardous waste laws.
‘Electronic recyclers, freight forwarders, and shipping brokers must be aware of the federal regulations required for legally exporting electronic waste,’ says Jeff Scott, director of Waste Programs for the EPA’s Southwest region. ... more

The Aluminum Association, the US body representing domestic and worldwide operating primary producers of aluminium, aluminium recyclers and producers of fabricated products, has announced an industry wide effort to increase the industry’s recycling rate for used aluminium beverage containers to 75% by 2015.

Australian recyclers’ fears over emissions trading |

The recycling industry in Australia has warned that it could become a victim of emissions trading if current proposals are not amended.
According to the Australian Council of Recyclers, some recycling companies will be forced to bear the full cost of buying greenhouse permits as well as higher electricity bills whereas big emitters using virgin materials will qualify for free permits. In a submission to the government, the council’s Chief Executive Anne Prince says jobs would be lost and the industry scaled back as recycling activities - and their carbon emissions - were exported to more viable countries, such as China.
