John Baird, Canada’s Environmental Minister, has joined with the Clean Air Foundation to introduce a ‘National Vehicle Scrappage Program’. The goal of the program is to offer incentives to people who retire their 1995 or older model vehicles. The program will be fully operating by January 2009 and the the incentives include: public transit passes; bicycles; a rebate on the purchase of a new car;; membership in a car-sharing program; or Can$ 300 incash. ... more

The world’s largest steel maker ArcelorMittal has signed an agreement to acquire Bakermet, a market leader in the scrap metal recycling industry at Eastern Ontario in Canada.
Bakermet which specialises in all types of ferrous and non ferrous metal, processed approximately 130 000 short tonnes of ferrous and 40 million pounds of non ferrous metals in 2007. BIR: Global steel production outlook seen positive |

The world steel industry outlook is promising with production seen rising to 1.5 billion tonnes in 2009, up from 1.4 billion tonnes in 2008, a Bureau of International Recycling (BIR) conference heard this week.
"The future outlook for the worldwide steel industry is very good," said Christian Rubach of German waste management firm Interseroh. Demand is also seen growing with apparent steel use expected to total 1.282 billion tonnes this year, up 6.7 percent from 2007, according to data from the International Iron and Steel Institute (IISI). ... more

Battery producer and recycler Exide Industries Ltd from Mumbai, India will invest 350 million rupees (US$8.2 million) to set up a second smelter in India.

Aluminium producer MAPCAN has officially opened its Alliston, Canada plant across from Honda’s automotive manufacturing operation in Alliston – which is set to open later this year.
The new plant recycles scrap aluminium such as siding, radiators, and car parts, and refines it until it can be used in the production of Honda’s vehicles. When the new Honda engine plant opens in September, 20 per cent of the aluminum produced at MAPCAN (Molten Aluminum Producer Canada) will head across the street to the Honda plant. The remaining 80% will be shipped to other Honda affiliates in the United States. ... more

The devastating earthquake in the Sichuan province of China is likely to have a substantial impact on the non-ferrous metals sector. The province is China’s third largest producer of refined zinc and lead, and accounts for 15% of the country’s total output. Following the earthquake on May 12, a number of refining operations have been forced to shut down and mining activities have been curtailed, resulting in a significant loss of production. Disruption to the electricity supply has affected aluminium production while some of the damaged manufacturing facilities have reduced their consumption of scrap.
