Electronics brand HP, together with the Global Digital Solidarity Fund (DSF) and Swiss research institute Empa have unveiled the first results of a pilot project to tackle the problem of e-waste in Africa. This initiative was carried out in South Africa, Morocco and Kenya and has allowed HP to gather vital information on how African governments, organizations and society are dealing with the rising problem of e-waste management, as well as test solutions on the way forward. ... more
US paper recovery rate grew in 2008, decline expected

March 25, 2009. The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) confirmes that the paper recovery rate in the United States grew in 2008 from 56 to 57.4% in 2008. The downturn caused a sharp decline in paper demand beginning in the fourth quarter of 2008. The long-term effect of this slowdown on recovery rates and recycling will depend on the speed with which the economy rebounds, the US association says. ... more

A new bill has been introduced to the US Congress which would provide for a US$$5000 voucher to be offered to car owners as an incentive to trade in their car - so long as it’s eight years or older - and buy a new, more fuel-efficient car. It’s a move the UK government is being asked to consider after Germany and other European countries introduced a similar incentive which pushed February sales to a ten year high. ... more

March 16, 2009. The World Steel Association (worldsteel) says that 7.2 million metric tons (mmt) of steel cans were recycled across the 37 countries reporting in 2007. The global recycling rate for steel cans was 68% in 2007, a slight increase from 67% in 2006. This is the highest level ever and is the third consecutive year that the steel can recycling rate has increased. ... more

US optical sorting systems developer Innov-X Systems and BT-Wolfgang Binder GmbH have entered into an agreement to develop and market a new high volume sorting system that will separate heat resistant and leaded glass from clean glass cullet. March 17, 2009. Korea plans to begin stockpiling scrap steel to smooth out fluctuations in supply and costs, aiding domestic manufacturers like POSCO. Tenders are now being invited by the UK Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) for plastics recycling facilities to be built in Scotland with funding from the Scottish Government under the £5 million grant scheme announced earlier this year. The funding is coming from the Government's Mixed Plastics Capital Grant Programme and is available to cover up to 30 per cent of the total investment required to develop new plastics recycling facilities in Scotland. This represents over 2.5 million tonnes of food and drinks cans and other steel containers being recycled in 2007. Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, has released the latest figures regarding the waste generation and recycling of household waste among the 27 member countries (EU27). In the EU27 in 2007, 42% of treated municipal waste was landfilled, 20% incinerated, 22% recycled and 17% composted. In average, 522 kg of municipal waste was generated per person in 2007. ... more
