Africa research project HP to tackle e-waste problems |

Electronics brand HP, together with the Global Digital Solidarity Fund (DSF) and Swiss research institute Empa have unveiled the first results of a pilot project to tackle the problem of e-waste in Africa.
This initiative was carried out in South Africa, Morocco and Kenya and has allowed HP to gather vital information on how African governments, organizations and society are dealing with the rising problem of e-waste management, as well as test solutions on the way forward. ... more

US paper recovery rate grew in 2008, decline expected |

The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) confirmes that the paper recovery rate in the United States grew in 2008 from 56 to 57.4% in 2008. The downturn caused a sharp decline in paper demand beginning in the fourth quarter of 2008. The long-term effect of this slowdown on recovery rates and recycling will depend on the speed with which the economy rebounds, the US association says. ... more

US Congress Considers Trade-In Incentives |

A new bill has been introduced to the US Congress which would provide for a US$$5000 voucher to be offered to car owners as an incentive to trade in their car - so long as it’s eight years or older - and buy a new, more fuel-efficient car. It’s a move the UK government is being asked to consider after Germany and other European countries introduced a similar incentive which pushed February sales to a ten year high. ... more

Global steel can recycling rate reaches record level |

The World Steel Association (worldsteel) says that 7.2 million metric tons (mmt) of steel cans were recycled across the 37 countries reporting in 2007.
The global recycling rate for steel cans was 68% in 2007, a slight increase from 67% in 2006. This is the highest level ever and is the third consecutive year that the steel can recycling rate has increased. ... more

Innov-X teams up with Austrian company to advance glass sorting technology |

US optical sorting systems developer Innov-X Systems and BT-Wolfgang Binder GmbH have entered into an agreement to develop and market a new high volume sorting system that will separate heat resistant and leaded glass from clean glass cullet. Under the agreement, BT-Wolfgang Binder will not only participate in the development, but will also provide sales and marketing support for the new glass sorter. ... more

Bangladesh ship-breaking yards told to close |

Bangladesh | Environmentalists are hailing a Bangladesh High Court decision to order the closure, in two weeks, of all ship-salvaging yards which do not have environmental clearances. Recycling Equipment developer Marathon Equipment, is closing its Clearfield, Pennsylvania manufacturing plant effective May 15, 2009. “'Due to poor economic conditions, production of the Clearfield plant is being consolidated with the Vernon plant. We greatly appreciate the dedication and contribution of the Clearfield employees since the plant’s opening in 1989,' says Mike Beuke, VP of Operations at the US company.

South Korea plans to stockpile scrap steel |

Korea plans to begin stockpiling scrap steel to smooth out fluctuations in supply and costs, aiding domestic manufacturers like POSCO. Kim Min, Director of Metals & Chemicals division at the Ministry of Economy says that, ‘Since prices have fallen, we reckon now is the best time. The government may store about 150,000 tonnes initially and has sought about KRW 50 billion from the supplementary budget, subject to parliament’s approval.’ ... more

Scotland launches programme for plastics recycling |

Tenders are now being invited by the UK Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) for plastics recycling facilities to be built in Scotland with funding from the Scottish Government under the £5 million grant scheme announced earlier this year.
The funding is coming from the Government's Mixed Plastics Capital Grant Programme and is available to cover up to 30 per cent of the total investment required to develop new plastics recycling facilities in Scotland. Steel packaging recycling in EU keeps growing |

The latest figures released by European packaging association APEAL, show that 69% of steel packaging is recycled in Europe. This represents over 2.5 million tonnes of food and drinks cans and other steel containers being recycled in 2007. According to the latest available data, this places recycling rates for steel above those of other packaging materials such as plastic, beverage cartons and glass (19.7%, 32% and 62% respectively). ... more

40% of European household waste recycled in 2007 |

Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, has released the latest figures regarding the waste generation and recycling of household waste among the 27 member countries (EU27). In the EU27 in 2007, 42% of treated municipal waste was landfilled, 20% incinerated, 22% recycled and 17% composted.
In average, 522 kg of municipal waste was generated per person in 2007. ... more

Sweden | Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden, is developing a Competence Centre for Recycling (CCR) which is being funded by the Swedish government with additional investment from Scandinavian recycling group Stena Metall. Christian Ekberg, Professor of Industrial Materials Recycling, comments: ‘This means that Chalmers is one of a kind in the worldwide recycling field.
