Gordon Shaw Sr has become President of Marathon Equipment Co. Inc., Vernon, Alabama, U.S., in succession to Ed Furnari who retired last December. Mr Shaw, a 20-year veteran of the recycling and waste equipment industry, began his Marathon Equipment career in sales. He became Vice President of Sales & Marketing and then Executive Vice President prior to his appointment as President.

Metal Management Inc., Chicago, U.S., has separated the positions of Chairman of the Board and CEO. Daniel Dienst, an independent director of the company since June 2001, has been named Chairman while Albert Cozzi - previously Chairman and CEO - will remain as CEO and assume the position of Vice Chairman. ‘This change establishes independence between the Chairman and CEO positions, a strategy that’s important to our company in discharging our responsibilities to our stockholders,’ commented Mr Cozzi.

* Texas Shredder Inc
ALL Recycling of Englewood, Colorado, U.S., has purchased a shredder system from Texas Shredder, Inc. (TSI) of San Antonio, Texas. The 80/104 NG model will incorporate the latest front-wall assembly design and longer-lasting bottom grate design. It will include a new 35º feed chute, hydraulic double feedroll, BEST undermill vibrator, ‘No Weld’ disc rotor and Springs shredder isolation mounts. The new system will also incorporate an ‘autopilot’ production performance feature to control the functions of the shredder in order to increase production, lower energy costs and improve finished product quality. The TSI shredder system will be powered by a new 2500 600-RPM Alstom wound round motor that will be commissioned and serviced by Mueller Engineering. ALL Recycling anticipates entering operation by the third quarter of 2003.

In the June issue of Recycling International, we indicated that 450 delegates had attended the most recent BIR Convention in Oslo, Norway. The BIR secretariat has pointed out that, in actual fact, the event attracted more than 600 BIR delegates plus around 250 accompanying persons.
* O.Kay and LM form OKLM
O. Kay Engineering of Leicestershire, U.K., has joined forces with its German partner Ludden + Mennekes (LM) to form a new company. The joint venture - OKLM Recycling Technology Ltd - has been created to allow the two companies to co-supply large-scale recycling and composting plants to U.K. customers from under a single roof. Although a 50:50 subsidiary of O.Kay and LM, OKLM is backed by LM’s giant European operation; O.Kay’s own plant in Leicestershire will also manufacture for OKLM and will serve customers both as an English-speaking contact company and a rapid-response technical support team. The supervisory board of Austrian truck crane manufacturer Palfinger has appointed Wolfgang Anzengruber to the post of Chairman of the Management Board. Mr Anzengruber takes up his new position on September 1 and will be responsible primarily for manufacturing processes (technology, production, assembly, development and innovation) at Palfinger.

U.S. Schnitzer Steel Industries, Inc. has promoted Jay Robinovitz, currently General Manager of Schnitzer's Tacoma recycling yard, to the newly-created post of Vice President of Operations. In this role, he will assume lead responsibility for all Pacific Northwest, maintenance and marine terminal operations, and will also assist with company-wide operational strategies.

MaTech, the Benelux agent for Taurus scrap shears, has recently sold several new and second-hand scrap shears. Naxor Company from Beirut in the Lebanon has purchased a second-hand Taurus 645 HP shear with 600-tonne cutting force and a 6000 mm box to speed up its scrap operations in the Middle East. In The Netherlands, meanwhile, a completely refurbished scrap shear has been installed at Eerste Lelystadse Schroothandel in Lelystad; the SM652P pre-compression shear boasts a shearing force of 650 tonnes and is expected to double company output to 15 tonnes per hour. MaTech has also taken an order from Belgian scrap recycler All Minute Metals and will commission a 600-tonne scrap shear with 6 metre box towards the end of 2003.

The Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI) has appointed Teresa Presas as its new Director General. She replaces Marie S. Arwidson who, after almost six years in office, is moving back to Sweden to become Director General of the Swedish Forest Industries Federation (SFIF). Ms Presas (51) was born in Portugal and, since 1982, had been Vice-President - European Affairs for Tetra Pak Europe and Africa, as well as Director of Corporate Environmental Affairs. Ms Presas has a degree in psychology and is fluent in Portuguese, French, English, Spanish and Italian.

Merrick Construction Co. of Cottonport, Louisiana, U.S., has purchased two CM chip shredders from Columbus McKinnon Corp., Sarasota, Florida, U.S. to process tyre shreds and whole scrap tyres at a stockpile in Atlanta, Texas. These units represent the fourth and fifth CM machines purchased by Merrick. At the clean-up site, small chips are screened from the tyre shreds prior to processing in the new shredders, which work in tandem to produce cleanly cut tyre-derived fuel (TDF) chips at throughput rates up to 15 tons an hour. The TDF is subsequently shipped to Louisiana for use as a fuel supplement in paper mills. To help Merrick manage its operating costs, Columbus McKinnon has arranged the knife groupings such that they can be reground and staged down through all five of Merrick’s CM machines.
