Dear Samantha,

In general England surpasses the U.S. when it comes to recycling -- this is true when I last examined it in 1995. I have no current figures on England. I do have current figures on the U.S.:

Total municipal solid waste recycled: 27.8 percent

Glass recycled: 23 percent

Metals recycled: 35 percent

Plastics recycled: 5 percent

Textiles recycled: 13 percent

Wood recycled: 6 percent

Yard waste recycled: 45 percent

Paper and paperboard recycled: 42 percent

Figures are for 1999.
