Dec. 10, 1996,

Dear Stuart Rothman,

Quick pros and cons of recycling.

Good source on the con side is the article by John Tierney Recycling is Garbage, in the New York Times Sunday Magazine, 6/30/96. Another con article is Curbside Recycling Comforts the Soul, But Benefits are Scant in the Wall Street Journal, 1/19/95.
On the pro side, see the letters to the New York Times Sunday Magazine 7/21/96 about the Tierney article; and Advantage Recycle: Assessing the Full Costs and Benefits of Curbisde Recycling, by John Ruston and Richard Denison, Environmental Defense Fund, 2/23/95. Available from the EDF, 257 Park Avenue South, NY, NY 10010 (Tel: 212-505-2100).
On the pro side, see also, Recycling Means Business in California: A Library of Facts by the Californians Against Waste Foundation, Jobs Recycling Project, 2/95. Available from Californians Against Waste Foundation, 926 J St, Suite 606, Sacramento, CA 95814.

There are many more, but these are among the best and easiest for you to obtain on your own. The Research Library for RCRA at US EPA-New England has these documents when you have more time to obtain them by sending us your mailing address.
