Subject: Re: Importers /or brokers for paper exported from the Caribbean (Roger Carmichael)

March 25, 1997

Dear Roger Carmichael,

The United States Dept. of Commerce s International Trade Administration is best positioned to answer this question.
The Office of Latin America and the Caribbean desk is at tel # 301-482-4673. There is a different desk for each Caribbean country.

Another contact is the Export-Import Bank of the US, in NYC at tel 212-466-2950 or fax at 212-466-2959.

You should also get in touch with the American Paper Institute, one of the principal trade associations of the US paper industry, in NYC at tel: 212-340-0600.

If you wish to talk with a paper broker, I can give you 3 at random from the New England region (no endorsement is given or implied; I could as easily have given you 3 others):

Earthworm, Boston, MA tel: 617-426-7344
American Waste Paper, Inc., Cranston, RI, tel: 401-781-5820
Hershman Recycling, Inc., West Haven, CT, tel: 203-933-7979.

However, I suspect that everyone will tell you the same thing: right now in the business cycle there is no money to be made in exporting paper to the US. If you believe that there is, you are more than a year out of date in the information loop.
