The best documentary summary of the impact of plastics on the environment writ large is in a document written by US EPA 7 years ago, a Report to Congress: Methods to Manage and Control Plastic Wastes EPA/530-SW-89-051, February, 1990 now available through NTIS whose telephone # for orders is 703-487-4630 or 4650.

Regarding waste minimization methods:

Profile of the Rubber and Plastics Industry by US EPA Enforcement and Compliance Assurance (Sector Notebook) EPA 310-R-95-016 available at US EPA s website or from US GPO at 202-512-1800.
There are also many Environmental Research Brief case studies by the US EPA Risk Reduction Engineering Lab for specific manufacturers of plastic products. These may be obtained either through NTIS or sometimes through the Pollution Prevention Info Clearinghouse (PPIC) also accessible at the US EPA website.

Furthermore, the book Pollution Prevention Technology Handbook by Robert Noyes (Noyes Publications, 1993) has an extensive chapter on the subject.
