July 9, 1997

Dear Bailey Mylleville,

Other markets for wood waste other than landscaping uses and particleboard:

pallets
paper
playground underlay
building forms
animal bedding
medium density fiberboard
 - All of the above were mentioned in an article in Biocycle, July, 1996, which further cited Use of Recycled Wood and Paper in Building Applications by the USDA Forest Service and the Forest Products Society.

paper and paperboard uses are documented in another Biocycle article in the 11/95 issue Urban Wood Markets in the Northwest .

asbestos substitute and automotive uses are documented in Growing with Wood Waste in WASTE AGE, 5/95.

Two other uses of which we have heard are for cat litter and for wood-chip concrete . This latter use is documented in a Japanese study Newly developed wood-chip concrete with recycled timbers by Y. Kasai, et. al., College of Industrial Technology, Nihon University. The article was published in Disposal and Recycling of Organic and Polymeric Construction Materials ed by Y. Ohama which was the conference proceedings of the organization RILEM and published by a British publisher which I only know as E FN .
