Dear Karin Fones (AND PROACTIVELY EVERYBODY ELSE INTERESTED IN THE PR ASPECTS OF RECYCLING PROJECTS):

OR

 It don't mean a thing
If it ain't got that effective PR

One thing that has been lacking in the literature is a one-size-fits-most good planning guide for public relations/publicity/outreach/get the message out manuals for recycling.
That is, until now.
The occasion for there being one is America Recycles Day which in case you hadn't heard, is to be held on November 15, 1997 with attentions from the Vice President's Office on down.

As far as I can make out the aims of this day are
- to persuade detractors in the press that recycling is worthwhile
- to boost sagging market values for recyclable
- to reinforce public support for recycling
- to promote 'buy recycled' campaigns

It is an enlargement of an event started in 1994, Texas Recycles Day which got 145,000 Texans pledging to increase their recycling efforts in 1996 alone.

The effort has spawned a Special Event Planning Guide which I encourage you to look at. As far as I can figure out, it is available from:

Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission
PO Box 13087
Austin, TX 78711
    or
www.tnrcc.state.tx.us

It may also be available from the Steel Recycling Institute

It includes activities, PSA samples, resources, etc. geared to all of the audiences needed to ssupport recycling.

It should also be a good PR manual for years to come not geared to a one-shot-deal event.
