Dear Bryan,

I don't know much about recycling in WI. Those who will arein EPA Region 5 (call: Paul Ruesch at 312-886-7598) or your state environmental agency's recycling coordinator.

In 1995, WI generated 5,434,000 tons or municipal solid waste of which it recycled 40%, landfilled 56% and incinerated 4%.
The generation figure includes some industrial waste, which would not normally be counted.
There are 600 curbside collection program serving a population of 3 million pelope, and there are 148 composting facilities in WI.
By contrast, WI has 51 landfills and 2 MSW incinerators. It cost $30/ton to dump at a WI incinerator on average, and $45.50 to dump a ton of MSW at a WI incinerator. WI landfills have approximately 8 years additional capacity.
Batteries, tires, yard waste, motor oil, white goods and all recyclables are banned from disposal in WI landfills.

In 1995, WI recovered 607 thousand tons of Paper, 491 thousand tons of yard wastes, 18,000 tons of plastics, 97,000 tons of glass, 11,000 tons of tires.

WI is one of only 6 states in the US that has not set a recycling goal for itself.
