Subject: Re: Used oil from engines (Torres)

Oct. 7, 1998

Dear Mr./Ms. Torres,

Used diesel oil from electricity-producing engines can be recycled, collected and used over again. 380 million gallons are recycled each year in the US as of 1996. Used oil can be rerefined or processed for furnace fuel oil. It can be reconditioned on-site which involves removing impurities, or it can be inserted into a petroleum refinery or processed and burned for energy. The major mitigator of the process is a leak-free environment since any profit to recycling can be easily wiped out by the environmental costs of )and regulatory cost of) leakage.
Fly-by-night companies with no experience in environmental protection should not engage in used oil recycling.
