I don't quite understand your question about the practicalities of recycling in the home : what is a home recycling unit? Usually this means the type of collection: whether comingled (all materials in one bin) or source separated (separate compartments for different materials. This entirely depends on what happens in the rest of the collection system and whether there is a sophisticated MRF (Materials Recovery Facility) in the materials' future.
If you are referring to actual transformation of physical characteristics of collected materials in the home, the only practical elements of that are can crushing, and some plastics grinding, but these are largely ignored in the Ameriocan system.
So, I am asking for clarification.
