I cannot answer your question for the UK, just for the US. However, I would approach The Institute of Metals as well as the WARMER Bulletin in England to answer your question: one of them will certainly know the answer.
In the US, in 1996, 2.2 million tons of major appliances (shredded) were recovered and 1.3 million tons were discarded. However, I'm not certain that of the 1.3 million tons, some of that wasn't exported from other than scrap yards, junkyards, and official recycling programs.
