Dear Katie Candiano,
Though you say that you have searched at this site for archives responses to previous questions, I know that they are here and that you ought to have found them. However, I will repeat what is easily retrievable:
There were 2,890,000 tons of aluminum discarded in the US municipal waste stream as of 1996.
There were 1,020,000 tons of aluminum recycled in the same waste stream and year.
In 9/98 recycled AL was selling for about $.55/lb
At about the same time virgin AL ingot was selling for about $.70/lb
And according to the National Assn. of Recycling Industries of Japan, the savings of 49,379 kwh/ton or 96% is the difference between creating virgin aluminum or recycling aluminum.
