Among the 47 good reasons why you should want to recycle put out by the NYC Office of Recycling a few years ago are:

Garbage disposal is the 3rd largest municipal government expense after police protection and education.
At $100 per ton, it could cost NYC $1.7 million each day to ship garbage elsewhere
A ton of recycled newsprint saves 17 trees and can be recycled 5 to 8 times
Making new paper from old paper uses 30-50% less energy.
For every job created by harvesting trees, 5 jobs are created by recycling the paper manufactured from those trees
Glass produced through recycling reduces air pollution by 20% and water pollution by 50%
The US imports 91% of its aluminum and throws away 1 million tons of it every year, a loss of over $400 million.
Your grandmother did it in World War II.
