Dear Stephanie Kambouris,

Gypsum plaster from 1931 is recyclable. You can remove the mesh backing the same way one removes wallboard's paper backing. The trick, as I understand it is to let the stuff get wet, which makes separation easier. If painted and you fear lead paint, get it tested. If it is not lead paint, it is not a problem; if it is, then don't recycle it. The trade magazine C D Debris Recycling has had several articles on gypsum. Published by Intertec, contact Bill Turley at 312-726-2802 in Chicago. Also, the National Assn. of Home Builders and their research center (www.nahbrc.org) may be helpful as well as the CWC at www.cwc.org
