Rarely would it pay to build a landfill that would not last at least 20 years. However, there is no average size nor lifespan in scientific terms. Most of those with which I'm familiar were build to last 30 years at least.
What are ways of extending landfill life span? Recycling high volume materials such as construction debris, food waste, white goos as well as the usual paper, metals, glass, plastics, automotive, wood. Also, landfill compacting, balefill operation, Pay As You Throw programs at the consumer level, and practicing basic waste/source reduction techniques.
