Dear R. W. Rushing:
The answer to your question is that no one counts this. We know that as of 1998 there were about 9,000 curbside collection (serving 51% of the population and makng recycling comparatively easy) and 12,000 drop-off recycling programs serving the US and that about 95% of the US had access to a recycling program. 28% of recyclable waste was recycled. I suspect that that 28% figure is also the approximate answer to your question, but I have no hard, finite, documentable proof.
