Dear Lucy Browne,

Used oil can be recycled in 4 ways:

- Reconditioned: remove impurities, usually onsite in an industrial setting or automotive repair setting.
- Inserted into refining: use used oil as a feedstock with virginoil sources
- Re-refining: remove impurities by an extensive process including several filtrations
- Burning for energy recovery: water and particulates must first be removed A gallon of used oil contains about 140,000 btus. Must be done in industrial furnaces, boilers or hazardous waste incinerators in the US.

Oneida Royal Model 0-224B-5
Shenendoah Model 200
Clean Burn Models CB86AH, CB86BH, CB90AH

Some emissions of great concern in waste oil burning are:

heavy metals (especially lead, arsenic, cadmium, chromium), halogens, PCBs and hydrochloric acid.

It is environmentally better to burn used oil in an approved emission-controlled burner than to dump it in water. Oil does not biodegrade in water; it just dilutes.

There is an extensive textbook description of recycling methods for used oil in Resource Recovery Recycling Handbook f Industrial Wastes , by Marshall Sittig (Noyes Data Corp., 1975) and also in Waste Oil Recovery Disposal, by Vaughn S. Kimball (Noyes Data Corp., 1975).

Used oil from automotive uses may, after filtrations, be mixed with diesel if it meets diesel specifications for its intended use.
